This Quiet Season

I love the holidays. The food, the folks, the fun all combine to uplift moods and optimism.

I don’t love winter. The undeniable evidence of celebration indulgences, the secluding gray parlor of the skies, and the extra risks associated with just doing the basics. Hey the holidays are over. Where is Spring, right?
Well not so fast. Just by happy accident I heard a commercial refer to this as the quiet season the other day. It clicked. I stopped to consider winter for a new perspective. Excess followed by restraint, gatherings followed by solitude, celebration balanced by reflection. Maybe this is the natural order of things. Is this a gift of time for composure and introspection through which we prepare and fortify ourselves in advance of the coming more active seasons? Couched in the innate urge to resolutely make things ” better this year” are we responding to what is natural and necessary? Wow! All this time spent wishing Spring would hurry rather than gleaning all the riches of the season.

Something to consider in this the Quiet Season.
